How to Prepare Your House for Drywall Repair: A Checklist

A little preparation before your drywall crew shows up makes the job go faster and protects your stuff. Here's exactly what to do — and what not to stress about.

Clear the Work Area

The single most helpful thing you can do is clear furniture and belongings away from the repair area. You don't need to empty the whole room — just move things away from the wall or ceiling being worked on. A 4-foot clear zone is usually enough for wall work; more is better for ceiling jobs.

Large furniture that can't be moved easily can stay — a good crew will work around it and cover it. But the more clear space, the faster the work goes and the less risk to your belongings.

Protect Your Floors

Drywall work generates dust — always. Joint compound drips occasionally. We bring drop cloths and floor protection, but if you have hardwood floors or carpet you're especially concerned about, lay down your own protection before we arrive. A layer of rosin paper under drop cloths works well on hardwood.

Handle Pets Before the Crew Arrives

This is important for a few reasons:

• Doors and exterior access may be left open for material staging
• Drywall dust is irritating to pets' respiratory systems
• Tools, chemicals, and open compound buckets are hazards for curious animals
• Some dogs are stressed by strangers in the house — a stressed dog slows everyone down

The easiest solution: put pets in a back room with the door closed, or arrange for them to be somewhere else on repair days. If your pet needs to be in the house, let us know when you book so we can plan around it.

Make Sure the Area Is Accessible

If the repair is in a room that requires moving through the rest of the house, think about the path. Clear hallways of obstacles. If there's a gate code, security system, or any access complication, give us that information the night before — not the morning of.

For outdoor access (material delivery, equipment), make sure the driveway or parking area near the front of the house is clear.

Plan for Drying Time

Most drywall repairs take two visits — or at least two phases — because joint compound needs to dry between coats. A repair that starts in the morning won't be ready for texture until the next day at the earliest. Plan accordingly: if the room needs to be usable that evening, the work may need to be scheduled differently.

On multi-day jobs, the room will be in progress — don't plan to paint it or use it fully until the crew has signed off that it's complete.

Keep Kids Away From the Work Area

Drywall work involves sharp tools, step ladders, open buckets of compound, and dust. Children should stay out of the work area during active repair. If you're home with young kids during the job, have a plan for keeping them occupied in another part of the house.

What You Don't Need to Do

• Don't try to fix it yourself first — spackle applied over a hole that needs a proper patch makes our job harder. Leave it as-is.
• Don't paint over it — fresh paint over an unrepaired crack hides the scope of the damage and can complicate repair.
• Don't worry about having paint ready — we prime and texture; painting is a separate step you do after. Unless you've specifically booked painting as part of the job, we hand it back primed and ready.
• Don't move heavy furniture by yourself if it's a risk — ask us. We'd rather spend five minutes helping you move something safely than work around an injury.

Day-Of Checklist
