• Corner bead — if the old window had drywall wrapped returns, the corner bead is frequently bent or torn out
• Water-damaged drywall — older windows that leaked often leave soft, damaged drywall in the wall below the sill that needs to come out before we close it up

2. Remove any soft or water-damaged drywall; dry framing if needed
3. Patch and fill damaged areas; replace sections as needed
4. Install corner bead on all exposed edges
5. Mud, sand, and repeat until flush with surrounding wall
6. Texture match — orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, or smooth
7. Prime coat — ready for paint
