Flat-screen TVs changed how Phoenix homeowners use their walls. Most living rooms, bedrooms, and even bathrooms now have a TV mounted directly to the drywall — and when it's time to move, redecorate, or sell, those mount holes need to be properly repaired. The damage is usually more than it looks.
TV mounts use heavy hardware — lag bolts into studs, toggle bolts or snap toggles through open drywall, and sometimes full mounting plates that cover a large area. When you pull all of that out, what's left behind isn't just a few nail holes. You often end up with oversized voids, torn drywall paper, cracked edges around toggle cavities, and sometimes an anchor stuck inside the wall that shredded the gypsum when you extracted it. If this is a rental unit, your security deposit is on the line. If you're selling, a buyer's agent will notice. This is the kind of repair that's worth doing right.
We repair TV mount holes regularly across the Phoenix metro. Here's what's actually involved and what to expect.
The repair approach depends almost entirely on how the TV was mounted in the first place. There are a few common scenarios:
Mount removed — what's left is more than just holes
Lag bolts into studs. This is the correct way to mount a heavy TV. Lag bolts typically leave holes around 5/16" to 3/8" in diameter, 2–4 per mount bracket. These are clean and relatively easy to fill — not a big deal individually, but the surrounding drywall often has minor cracking or surface damage from the mount scraping against the wall over time.
Toggle bolts through open drywall. Toggle bolts (the kind that expand inside the wall cavity) leave a larger hole — often 1/2" or bigger — and when you remove them, the wings frequently snap off inside the wall or tear the gypsum edge on the way out. The result is a ragged cavity that's bigger than the bolt diameter and needs backing before it can be filled properly.
Snap toggles or Wingits. These leave a smaller surface hole but a significant void behind the face. The plastic body stays in the wall when you unscrew the bolt. Depending on how it was installed, the surrounding drywall face may be compressed or slightly cracked. You typically need to widen the opening slightly to get a clean repair.
Drywall anchors (plastic or metal). Cheap plastic anchors driven into drywall without a stud are the worst. They frequently crack the surrounding gypsum when installed and cause more damage when removed. Some homeowners try to drive them flush rather than extracting them — this works for tiny nail-sized anchors, but not for the larger sizes used under TV weight.
Mounting plate over a large area. Some articulating mounts use a backing plate that spans multiple studs and covers a 12"×12" or larger area. When that comes off, you may find multiple lag bolt holes, anchor cavities, paint color ghosting (a rectangle where paint aged differently behind the mount), and sometimes surface damage where the mount shifted. The holes are manageable — the paint ghost is a separate problem.
Proper tools make the difference in a seamless repair
Small stud bolt holes (3/8" or smaller) with no surrounding damage can be filled with joint compound in one or two applications, sanded smooth, and textured to match. These are the easiest version of this repair.
Toggle bolt cavities and anchor voids need a different approach. For holes up to about 3/4", a setting-type compound (hot mud) packed into the opening with a backing — sometimes mesh tape, sometimes a small drywall piece cut to fit — gives the repair enough structure to hold. For anything larger, a proper California patch or clip-on backer is the right move.
After filling and sanding, the repair is textured to match the surrounding wall. In Phoenix, that's almost always orange peel or knockdown — two textures that are common but require practice to replicate convincingly, especially when the repaired area is small. Phoenix's intense natural light is punishing on texture mismatches; a wall that looked fine under incandescent lighting shows every imperfection in direct desert sun coming through a window.
After texture, the area is primed and painted to match. This is often the most difficult part. A spot repair on a painted wall almost never matches exactly — paint fades, sheen changes, and lot numbers differ. For rental move-outs where the whole wall is getting repainted anyway, this isn't an issue. For an owner-occupied home where matching the existing color is critical, a full wall repaint from corner to corner is sometimes the cleanest solution.

This is one of the most common reasons people call us for TV mount repairs. Arizona landlord-tenant law (ARS 33-1321) distinguishes between normal wear and tear — which landlords can't charge for — and actual damage, which they can deduct from your security deposit. A small picture-nail hole is usually considered normal wear. A 1/2" toggle bolt hole is not. Four lag bolt holes from a 65" TV mount definitely are not.

After a proper repair, the wall looks like nothing was ever mounted there
Small lag bolt holes in good condition — clean edges, no cracking, minimal number — are a reasonable DIY project if you're willing to take your time with compound coats and practice the texture before you hit the wall. There are good YouTube tutorials on how to apply orange peel from a rattle can, and for a single wall in a low-stakes situation, you can get acceptable results.
